Walmart Requires Account for Vizio Smart TVs, Raising Privacy and Advertising Questions
Walmart has announced that new Vizio smart‑TV models will now require users to create or log into a Walmart account before they can activate any of the TV’s smart features. The change, which applies to Vizio’s latest OS‑based televisions, forces buyers to merge or delete any existing Vizio accounts and ties the TV experience to Walmart’s growing advertising ecosystem.
The move is part of Walmart’s strategy to integrate Vizio’s ad‑driven platform into its $6.4 billion advertising division. By consolidating user identities under a single Walmart profile, the retailer aims to deliver more targeted, data‑rich ads while promising enhanced privacy safeguards. However, critics warn that the requirement adds friction to the setup process and could lead to broader data consolidation for consumers.
Current Vizio owners can choose to merge their Vizio account into a Walmart account or delete the Vizio account entirely. Walmart says the transition will be seamless, but the requirement may eventually expand to all Vizio televisions, not just the newest models.
