RK3588 and RK3576 Video Decoders Gain Upstream Linux Kernel Support

The Rockchip RK3588 and RK3576 video decoder blocks (VDPU381/383) have been merged into the mainline Linux kernel, bringing native hardware‑accelerated video decoding to a broader range of Linux‑based devices. This upstream integration, announced by Collabora, resolves long‑standing IOMMU reset issues, adds new V4L2 HEVC controls, and introduces a struct‑based register programming model that simplifies driver development.

Developers will now benefit from a unified code path across multiple SoCs, reducing the need for custom patches and easing maintenance. End‑users can expect smoother 4K HEVC playback on devices powered by RK3588 or RK3576, with multi‑core decoding support that improves performance on heavy‑load scenarios.

Collabora’s engineering lead highlighted that the new kernel support also paves the way for future enhancements, such as improved power management and tighter integration with the hardware acceleration stack.
