TikTok Decides Against End-to-End Encryption for Direct Messages, Citing Safety Concerns
In a recent report highlighted by TechCrunch, TikTok announced it will not implement end‑to‑end encryption (E2EE) for its Direct Messages (DMs). The company cited safety and child‑protection concerns, arguing that E2EE could hinder its ability to monitor harmful content and comply with law‑enforcement requests.
Currently, TikTok’s messaging platform uses standard transport encryption, which protects data in transit but still allows the company to access message content when necessary. While platforms such as WhatsApp, Signal, and iMessage have already rolled out E2EE, TikTok’s decision places it among the few major social apps that retain full visibility into private conversations.
The move has sparked debate among privacy advocates, who warn that the lack of E2EE could expose users to potential data breaches and surveillance. TikTok, however, maintains that its approach balances user privacy with the need to safeguard minors and prevent the spread of illicit material.
